The Indian Cybercrime Police has opened a criminal case against the head of the Meta Corporation (recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation) in the country, Arun Srinivasa. This was reported by India Today TV channel on July 31.

The reason for the trial was the spread on social media of fake videos with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, created using artificial intelligence (AI).

According to journalists, deepfakes with the participation of the head of government began to appear en masse during the student protests. The criminal prosecution was initiated after the company's representatives were called to the police.

The management of the platform was asked to explain the mechanisms that are used to identify and remove content created by neural networks. The company has not provided any comments at the moment.

Market participants expect an even greater tightening of the blocking of these messengers.

Bloomberg reported in January of this year that Meta was accused of fraud due to access to correspondence in its WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned). It was clarified that the company uses end-to-end encryption technology, in which only the participants of the correspondence have access to messages, but users believe that this information is false.
