- The US State Department summoned the Malaysian ambassador because of the ban on entry to Israeli citizens.
Malaysia's Ambassador to the United States, Shahrul Ikram Yaacob, was summoned to the State Department to explain his country's official position on the issue of non-recognition of Israel and the ban on entry of Israeli citizens. This was announced on July 23 by Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hassan.
It is noted that Kuala Lumpur's position on Israel remains unchanged and is fixed in the country's state policy.
"Non—recognition of the state of Israel or the Zionist regime is a long—standing and stable position of Malaysia," the Bernama national news agency quoted Hassan as saying.
The minister added that recently a citizen with a dual U.S. and Israeli passport entered Malaysia using an American document. After the authorities established his Israeli citizenship, the man was asked to leave the country.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on July 15 that the country's authorities would immediately deport Israeli citizens if they were found in the kingdom, as Kuala Lumpur does not recognize the Israeli state.
