Yampolskaya called Latvia's policy against the Russian language doomed

The policy of the Latvian authorities aimed at limiting the use of the Russian language is doomed to failure. This was announced on July 23 by Elena Yampolskaya, Adviser to the President of Russia.

"It is absolutely obvious that the country — I mean Latvia — where Pushkin, Chekhov and Dostoevsky, by their own admission, are known much more and much better than national cultural and literary figures, of course, this policy is doomed to failure," she told reporters.

The presidential adviser added that new measures are regularly taken in the Baltic states against everything related to Russia. Russian Russian language cartoons and toys were banned as an example, and she also recalled a recent case in Ukraine where a teacher was criticized for showing children a cartoon in Russian.

Russian Russians make up about 23% of the country's population, and about 40% of residents consider Russian to be their native language, according to Latvia's official statistics for 2024. Russian Russian language and culture, in her opinion, will not bring success to the country.

"As our president [Russian President Vladimir Putin] once said: 'I do not think that happiness will come to the home of those who pursue such a policy.' I would like to add that not only happiness will not come, but success will not come either, because you need to understand the full value of what you are giving up," she concluded.

On July 14, Latvian Culture Minister Nauris Puntulis said that the Russian language should disappear from the Latvian media. The head of the department believes that in Latvia, as an independent European state, there is no reason for the existence of media content in Russian.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on July 15 that Moscow considered Puntoulis' intention to exclude the Russian language from circulation in local media unacceptable and treated it with complete rejection. Peskov pointed out that such a policy of the Latvian authorities is not new, as they have long been known for their hatred of everything Russian and Russian-speaking.
