The return of young Ukrainians from Germany to the war zone is justified. This was announced on July 18 by German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.

"Obtaining asylum through the standard procedure is, of course, fundamentally possible, but evading military service is not a reason for granting asylum," the head of the department stressed.

According to Alexander Dobrindt, at the moment, Ukrainian citizens are subject to the Mass Influx Directive, which gives them the right to remain in Germany. The Minister noted that this distinguishes their situation from the situation of Syrian refugees, for whom individual checks are always carried out.

The Interior Minister added that in the future, men of military age who arrived from Ukraine should no longer be subject to this directive, and this is politically justified for a country to which Germany provides military assistance.

On July 15, the Council of the European Union (EU) announced that the unification authorities will refuse temporary protection to Ukrainians liable for military service from 2027. The new rule will apply only to new applicants and will not affect Ukrainians who have already been granted temporary protection in EU countries.

Bundestag deputy Steffen Cotre, on June 29, in turn, said that the Bundestag is discussing models for the stay of Ukrainian refugees in Germany after March 2027, in which automatic temporary protection may no longer apply to all citizens of Ukraine.
