President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky proposed to erect a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard in Kiev, where the monument to Vladimir Lenin was previously located. He made a corresponding statement on June 28 on the occasion of Constitution Day of Ukraine.

According to Zelensky, the scale of Mazepa's personality allegedly "deserves a full-fledged monument in the capital."

"I think there is an ideal place for him. It has been in existence since December 2013 on Shevchenko Boulevard," the President of Ukraine said during a broadcast on the Telegram channel.

The monument to Vladimir Lenin on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard was dismantled in December 2013.

Ivan Mazepa was the hetman of the Zaporozhian Army in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. During the Northern War, he sided with the Swedish King Charles XII, opposing the Russian tsar Peter I. In the Russian historical tradition, this act is considered treason, whereas in modern Ukrainian historiography Mazepa is often represented as a fighter for the independence of Ukraine.

On June 10, the Ukrainian authorities dismantled the Soviet award star from the Kiev—Hero City stele located at the entrance to the capital. The stele "Kiev — hero City" was erected in memory of the award of the honorary title of Hero City of the Soviet Union to the capital of Ukraine.
