The British armed forces intercepted the Smyrtos oil tanker in the English Channel. The British authorities are considering the possibility of selling 100,000 tons of oil from the vessel and transferring the proceeds to help Ukraine. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

What happened to the tanker in the English Channel

On June 14, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the interception of an oil tanker. According to him, the operation was completed successfully in the early hours of the morning. The Prime Minister thanked the military and law enforcement officers for holding the event.

At the same time, many British politicians have stated that oil legally belongs to their country. The discussion of the cargo sale is at the initial stage. The funds received can be transferred to Kiev directly or used to purchase military equipment for the Ukrainian army.

London's plans for oil disposal

According to The Telegraph newspaper, the British authorities are exploring options for selling oil from the detained vessel. Such a step is considered as a possible source of financing for assistance to Ukraine. In addition, we are talking about the transfer of revenue both directly and through arms procurement mechanisms.

Moscow's reaction to London's actions

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on June 25 called Britain's desire to sell oil from the Smyrtos tanker an attempt at expropriation by pirated methods. He noted that there are certainly legal options for responding to such actions. According to Peskov, all of them will be studied and used as much as possible.

At the same time, Peskov stressed that London has not shied away from such behavior throughout history. The Kremlin has no doubt about the availability of legal instruments to respond to what is happening.
