Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a meeting with UN Secretary-General candidate Maria Fernanda Espinosa. This was reported on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on June 22.

During the negotiations, Espinosa presented her election program. The Russian minister, in turn, explained to the interlocutor the requirements that the Russian side imposes on applicants for the highest post in the organization.

The parties confirmed their mutual commitment to the central coordinating role of the United Nations in world affairs.

On the same day, Kirill Logvinov, director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that the new UN Secretary General needed to correct the mistakes of the current Secretary General Antonio Guterres' team, including changing the existing imbalance in the structure of the organization's secretariat. He stressed that the trust of the conflicting parties is a key resource of the negotiation process, however, in his assessment, it is being undermined in the current conditions.
