The Great White shark was first spotted in the Mediterranean Sea
Divers captured a white shark in its natural habitat for the first time during an operation to recover abandoned fishing nets in the Mediterranean Sea. This was announced on June 8 by representatives of the non-profit environmental organization Healthy Seas Foundation.
"Divers in the Mediterranean Sea have taken what appear to be the first underwater images of an adult great white shark in its natural habitat," according to a publication on the foundation's official website.
The encounter with the predator took place in the Tunisian Strait. A team of specialists worked at depth, clearing the sunken ship from ghost nets. The mission participants emphasized that this discovery is of exceptional value to the scientific community.
According to Carlo Cattano, a doctor at the Zoological Institute in Naples, previously most of the data on white sharks in this region was based on the study of already dead individuals.
"The statistical probability of winning the lottery jackpot is much higher than the probability of encountering such a famous animal underwater," said Dirk Remmers, a representative of the international Ghost Diving organization.
On April 14, Need To Know magazine reported that the carcass of a Greenland polar shark, estimated to be about 150 years old, washed ashore in Ireland. Experts considered that the male shark was close to puberty when it washed ashore.
