- Onishchenko called voles and mice the main vectors of hantavirus in the Russian Federation
In Russia, voles and mice are the main vectors of hantavirus. This was announced on May 14 by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Onishchenko during a briefing "Hantavirus outbreak: Is a new epidemic threatening the world?" in the NSN.
"The main reservoir here <...> is just mice, voles. It's just mice that live in houses, and voles are the ones that live in the wild," he said.
The academician added that hantavirus, like coronavirus, refers to natural focal diseases. Onishchenko explained that in such diseases, the pathogen persists among certain animal species or vectors in nature, and when in contact with humans, it can cause infection.
Onishchenko said on the same day that hantavirus, which exists in Russia, manifests itself in the form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), the symptoms of which are cough, kidney failure and bleeding. He also noted that the incubation period of HFRS can range from three to five days to three weeks.
