Scientists have tested the effect of diet on the rate of biological aging
Four weeks on a low-fat or animal protein diet reduced biological age in people over 65. This was reported on May 11 in the journal Medical Xpress.
"It's too early to say unequivocally that specific dietary changes will prolong life. But this study provides a tentative signal about the potential of dietary interventions in old age," said lead author Caitlin Andrews, PhD, from the University of Sydney's School of Life and Environmental Sciences.
The study involved 104 people aged 65 to 75 years. Participants were randomly assigned to four diets: two with a mixed diet (half protein from animal sources, half from plant sources), two with a semi—lean diet (70% protein from plants). Within each group, the diet was divided into high-fat/low-carb and low-fat/high-carb diets. In all variants, protein accounted for 14% of the total caloric content.
The biological age of each participant was calculated using a profile of 20 biomarkers, including cholesterol, insulin, and C-reactive protein levels. Chronological age increases in the same way for everyone, while biological age reflects the real state of the body and is considered a more reliable indicator of health.
The group with a high-fat mixed diet, whose diet differed little from the usual diet before the experiment, showed no significant changes. A decrease in biological age according to the biomarker profile was recorded in the other three groups. The group with a high-carbohydrate mixed diet showed the greatest statistical confidence.: 14% protein, about 29% fat and 53% carbohydrates. The authors stipulate that the improvements may be temporary, and longer-term findings require additional research on different age groups.
Alexey Moskalev, Director of the Institute of Biology of Aging and Medicine of Healthy Longevity at the Russian Scientific Center of Surgery (RNCH) named after Academician B.V. Petrovsky, announced on April 16 that Russians from the age of 18 will be examined for the risks of early aging at centers for healthy longevity medicine. According to him, at the initial stage, visitors will receive a questionnaire and a calculation of their biological age.
