The longest reindeer sledding race has begun in Russia

The Ryilet reindeer sledding race has started in Chukotka. Participants will have to overcome about 90 kilometers of a difficult route. This was announced on March 19 by the press service of the government of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug on the VKontakte social network.

Four kayaks are participating in the competition, who will have to travel from the village of Chuvanskoe to the village of Lamutskoye through glaciers, forests and the bed of the Yeropol River.

"25 kilometers of the distance run along the riverbed, this section will require special skill and knowledge of the area," the regional government noted.

The race is expected to take from 7 to 12 hours, depending on weather conditions and snow conditions.

The organizers emphasized that the Ryilet is the longest reindeer sledding race in Russia. The competition is attended by both experienced reindeer herders and a beginner, for whom this is the first race. The winners will receive cash prizes and snowmobile equipment.

The governor of Transbaikalia, Alexander Osipov, announced on March 5 that the number of domestic reindeer in the Kalarsky district is almost 2 thousand heads. He noted that reindeer husbandry remains an important part of the traditional way of life and culture of indigenous peoples, and authorities and businesses support the industry through community financing, animal procurement, and educational projects for young reindeer herders.
