- The expert explained the difference between the salaries of men and women in the IT sector
Men are more likely to receive high salaries in almost all sectors of the economy. IT, as one of their highest-paying fields, was no exception. On March 4, Selecty's Chief Operating Officer, Ksenia Sheremetyeva, told Izvestia how the wage gap is forming.
According to a joint study by IT outsourcing company Selecty and hh.ru the difference in income is formed by the distribution of grades. There are more women who receive minimum and average salaries, and men are several times more likely to receive salaries above 300 thousand rubles.
Among developers, almost half of women (44.1%) receive less than 100,000 rubles per month, while only a quarter of men (25.5%). 34.8% of men have an income above 300 thousand rubles, compared to 11.7% of women. The gap in the range of 400-499 thousand rubles is especially noticeable: 13.5% of men versus 2.9% of women.
A similar situation is observed among system and business analysts. An income of 300-399 thousand rubles is received by 40.0% of men and 31.3% of women, and a salary of 400-499 thousand rubles is received by 26.7% of men versus 4.5% of women. At the same time, 35.8% of women and only 8.0% of men are concentrated in the range of 100-199 thousand rubles, which indicates differences in the career distribution of specialists.
"In IT, as in many other areas with high salaries, men are more likely to find themselves in leadership positions. The positions of CTO, Product Owner, information security managers, and leadership roles in general are occupied primarily by men. This situation creates a general salary gap, since in most companies employees of the same grade receive approximately the same amounts," said Sheremetyeva.
In addition, the expert noted that women are still less represented in information security, ML and other scarce and highly paid roles. As a result, the gender gap in the IT industry is formed not so much because of wage differences, but rather because of differences in career paths and specialization.
Service research data hh.ru and "My Shift" on February 25 showed that the welding profession became the highest-paid in Russia at the beginning of this year. According to the analysis, the median estimated salaries in vacancies amounted to 267-300 thousand rubles. The second place among the highest—paid positions was occupied by electricians (160 thousand rubles /), and below them were machinists and installers - about 147 thousand rubles.
