Reading for pleasure in 2025 decreased by 10% compared to the results of 2003. Researchers attribute this to a variety of factors, from the growing popularity of social media to the increasing availability of other types of entertainment. This was reported by Popular Science magazine on February 28.

At the same time, studies show that reading supports brain function and can slow down cognitive decline in old age. Therefore, many people want to read more, but they cannot form a stable habit.

The common myth that a habit is formed in 21 days has not been scientifically confirmed. A meta-analysis by Australian scientists has shown that habit formation usually takes from two to five months and depends on individual factors. One of the most effective ways to return a habit is to try to connect it with an existing one. For example, reading during your morning coffee instead of watching your phone.

According to the publication, books that do not arouse interest undermine motivation. A report by the British organization The Reading Agency showed that films, TV series and podcasts often become an "entry point" to reading: 41% of people who had previously stopped reading became interested in books due to film adaptations, 28% — because of podcasts and audiobooks.

Experts recommend starting with books related to your favorite stories or recommendations from reputable people. If the work does not arouse interest, it is better to postpone it and choose another one, since the formation of a habit is more important than the obligatory completion of reading. Indian researchers recommend starting with achievable goals, such as reading for 15 minutes a day and gradually increasing the time.

In addition, book clubs help to maintain the regularity of reading habits. This happens through social responsibility and discussion. Experts note that rituals and small "rewards" also help. Another comfortable way to restore a habit may be to return to books that you liked in childhood or adolescence, because with age, the perception of stories changes and repeated reading becomes a new experience.

A 2016 study conducted by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania showed that adults have no significant differences in understanding text when reading and listening to an audiobook. This makes the audio format a convenient alternative — you can listen while cleaning, traveling, or exercising. The authors also emphasized the convenience of e-books, which tire the eyes less and do not distract with notifications, unlike phones.

A 2017 study, in turn, showed that even just having a phone in the room, even if you don't use it, reduces concentration on a particular case. In the case of reading, scientists recommend putting gadgets in another room.

Reading supports cognitive health, develops imagination and empathy. Experts recommend starting small, choosing interesting books, using convenient formats, and minimizing distractions.

On January 16, National Geographic magazine reported on the impact of reading habits on life expectancy. It was clarified that regular reading is also associated with lower stress levels, improved memory, as well as protection against cognitive decline.
