Russia insists that the future Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) must strictly follow the Charter of the organization and strictly observe its principles. This was announced on February 26 by Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"We proceed from the fact that the future UN Secretary—General should strictly follow the Charter of the world organization, take a conscientious and non-selective approach to observing its principles, refrain from diluting the intergovernmental character of the United Nations and violating the principle of the 'division of labor' between the main organs of the Organization," TASS quoted him as saying.

According to the diplomat, the Russian side is currently carefully studying the candidates, analyzing their approaches to key global issues and issues of UN reform. He stressed that these measures are necessary to restore the prestige and strengthen the position of the world organization in the international arena. According to Logvinov, the hearings of candidates for the post of Secretary General of the World Organization will begin on April 20.

"The candidates will have the opportunity to present their election program," the diplomat said.

On November 26 last year, Argentina officially presented the candidacy of the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi for the post of UN Secretary General for 2027-2031. The document highlights Grossi's experience — more than four decades of diplomatic work, leadership of the International Atomic Energy Agency and contribution to ensuring international security and nuclear control.

The head of the Rosatom state Corporation, Alexey Likhachev, in turn, announced on November 27, 2025 that the IAEA, under the leadership of Grossi, remains the only non-politicized international organization. He also noted that Grossi's nomination to the post of UN Secretary General "makes sense."
