Potanin expressed confidence in the end of Ovechkin's career in Russia
Alexander Ovechkin, the captain of the Washington NHL club, may prefer to end his career at home instead of continuing to chase Wayne Gretzky's record for the number of goals, taking into account the playoffs. This was announced on February 18 by Vladimir Potanin, President of Norilsk Nickel and head of the Board of Trustees of the Night Hockey League, in the podcast "Out of Format".
According to him, reaching the mark of one thousand goals in the regular NHL championships is not an end in itself for the Russian forward. Potanin suggested that at some point Ovechkin might return to Russia and play in the Kontinental Hockey League.
"He started at Dynamo Moscow and maybe he will want to put this point here at home. Therefore, I will say a little bluntly: Ovechkin will not exchange the opportunity to finish his career in the KHL and play at home for chasing a thousand goals," he said, the issue of "Out of format" was published on the Norilsk Nickel page on the VKontakte social network.
Ovechkin currently has 996 goals scored in the NHL, with 919 in the regular season and 77 in the playoffs. In this indicator, he is second only to Wayne Gretzky, who has 1,016 goals (894 in the regular season and 122 in the playoffs). The Russian striker's contract with Washington runs until the end of the 2025/26 season.
