- The Economist pointed to the work of the United States on the possible lifting of sanctions against Russia
Over the past six months, the American side has been actively working on a scenario for the possible lifting of anti-Russian sanctions and has prepared for such a decision. This was reported on February 17 by The Economist magazine, citing sources.
According to information provided by Patrick Lord, head of the Risk Advisory consulting company, "many American lawyers worked overtime last summer, after [US President Donald] Trump has forced Ukraine to start a new round of negotiations to explore possible scenarios for lifting sanctions."
Another signal about the possibility of lifting sanctions was a meeting between "Western oil giants and their former Russian partners" on the sidelines of the international oil and gas conference ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi in November, which was reported to the publication by insiders.
It is also noted that a number of large American companies, including Apple and McDonald's, have registered new trademarks on the Russian market.
"In other words, most of the preparatory work has already been done," the article says.
According to The Economist, European countries are demonstrating their "extreme reluctance" to lift sanctions against Russia. Nevertheless, it is possible that Trump will be able to put pressure on European leaders and contribute to an early change in their position.
