- The State Duma warned about the possibility of revoking a driver's license due to epilepsy
Starting from March 1, 2027, changes will come into force in Russia that will allow canceling a driver's license if a citizen has medical contraindications, including epilepsy and mental disorders. This was announced on February 17 by State Duma Deputy Alexander Yakubovsky.
"We are talking about diseases that objectively create an increased risk on the road, such as severe mental disorders, epilepsy, serious visual impairments and other conditions that can lead to loss of control of the car," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Yakubovsky stressed that the measure is not punitive, but is aimed at improving road safety. So, the decision will be made only on the basis of medical data from the current list of the Ministry of Health. If the state of health returns to normal and the commission confirms the absence of contraindications, the rights can be restored.
Before the final cancellation, the citizen will be notified and given the opportunity to undergo an extraordinary medical examination. Yakubovsky called this step necessary to reduce the accident rate.
"Any condition that can lead to sudden loss of consciousness or uncontrolled driving behavior is a risk not only for the driver himself, but also for passengers, pedestrians and other road users," he said.
