The next day, the US Secretary of State announced that military officials from the Russian and Ukrainian sides were able to meet "for the first time in many years", and also added that the list of remaining controversial issues in Ukraine was narrowing. The remaining topics for discussion, as Rubio emphasized, remain complex and require further work.

A new round of negotiations between Russia, the United States and Ukraine on the settlement of the conflict will be held on February 17-18 in Geneva.
