A sharp collision with the ground during descent is one of the main dangers in deep-sea exploration of the seabed. This was announced on February 8 by Andrey Gebruk, Head of the Laboratory of Bottom Fauna of the Ocean at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biological Sciences, speaking on Russian Science Day.

According to him, before landing on the bottom, the device must strictly reduce speed according to the protocol, otherwise an uncontrolled impact on the ground is possible.

"It is extremely important to act according to protocol and not miss this moment. There have been cases twice when this protocol was violated for one reason or another, and the device came into uncontrolled contact with the bottom," the scientist told RIA Novosti, adding that rocks that can damage equipment are especially dangerous.

Even a soft sediment, he said, can become a threat, since the device can get stuck in it, blocking the crew at depth. Gebruk said that modern deep-sea vehicles are equipped with special "skis" that provide a soft landing and allow you to slide along the bottom.

Gebruk reported on February 7 that the idea of the depths of the ocean as a kind of "refugium" where ancient life forms could survive unchanged is erroneous. According to him, the ocean is a dynamic and complex system in which the water circulation covers all depths. As a result, climatic changes throughout Earth's history have affected not only the land, but also the oceanic fauna, leading to the extinction of some species and the emergence of others.
