- France called for the continuation of the dialogue on armaments against the background of the expiration of the START Treaty
Paris supports the expansion of international cooperation in the field of strategic arms against the background of the expiration of the Russian-American Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START Treaty). This was reported on February 6 on the website of the French Foreign Ministry.
"France confirms its support for strategic arms control between states with the largest nuclear arsenals, which is an essential tool for strategic stability," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The French Foreign Ministry noted that Paris confirms its commitment to deepen dialogue on risk reduction and strategic doctrines, including within the framework of the group of five permanent members of the UN Security Council (SC).
On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced Russia's readiness to discuss security issues with the United States. He noted that Moscow is ready for any development of events after the expiration of the START Treaty and stressed that now there is a vacuum in this matter.
On February 5, American leader Donald Trump supported the development of a new, improved strategic arms agreement instead of the START Treaty. According to him, the new agreement should be improved and modernized.
On February 4, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the United States had not given an official response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for states to voluntarily comply with the START Treaty restrictions for at least a year after the termination of the agreement.
