Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the causative agent of chronic papillomavirus infection. Some of them can lead to the development of various diseases, and some types have oncogenic potential. This was announced on January 6 by Alexey Shevchuk, Head of the Oncogynecology Department at the N.N. Blokhin National Research Medical Center of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

"In addition to malignant tumors such as cervical cancer, HPV can provoke the development of cancer of the vulva, vagina, cancer of the penis and anal canal," he said in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».

The doctor explained that certain types of HPV can cause benign changes such as papillomas or warts, but even these require attention. Shevchuk stressed that with a rapid increase in the size of the formation, the appearance of hyperpigmentation or bleeding, it is necessary to immediately consult a specialist, since such symptoms may indicate a malignant tumor.

He also noted that international experience shows that vaccination is highly effective in reducing the incidence of cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers.

Earlier that day, Lyubov Stankevich, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Director of Laboratory Medicine and Manufacturing at the LabQuest medical company, reported. that acute respiratory viral infections are often perceived as a mild illness accompanied by a runny nose, cough and fever. However, in practice, any respiratory infection, both viral and bacterial, can lead to serious complications.
