43 fishermen cut off from shore by ice were rescued in the Sea of Okhotsk
In the Sea of Okhotsk, near the village of Starodubskoye, ice movements tore off an ice floe that formed a crack up to 6 meters wide. The fault cut off a group of fishermen at a distance of about 800 meters from the shore. This was reported to Izvestia on February 4 by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Employees of the state inspection on snowmobiles immediately arrived at the scene. Rescuers quickly ferried people across the rift, and all 43 fishermen were brought ashore. As a result of the incident, no one was injured.
The coast survey continues. 12 people and six pieces of equipment, including freelance units of the Dolinsk administration, were involved in the rescue operation.
Sergei Anoprienko, a member of the Federation Council Committee on Agrarian and Food Policy and Environmental Management, said on January 14 that the melting of the so-called Doomsday Glacier (Thwaites Glacier) does not pose a danger to Russia, as it is a natural process. It was noted that the glacier, with an area of 192 thousand square kilometers, is rapidly collapsing due to warm ocean currents. Its complete melting can raise the level of the world's oceans by at least 60 cm.
