The link between nutrition and the immune system does exist, and the state of the intestinal microbiota plays a key role in protecting the body. On January 31, Ekaterina Kashukh, a gastroenterologist, told how intestinal health affects the immune system and which foods should be included in the diet to strengthen the body's defenses.

The expert emphasized that a significant part of our immune system is located in the intestine, including lymphocytes, macrophages and plasma cells that produce immunoglobulins to protect against pathogens. What we eat directly affects our ability to resist infections.

Kashuk advises paying special attention to the intestinal microbiota, which is the most important intermediary between food and the body.

It clarifies that protein from various sources — meat, fish, eggs and legumes — plays an important role in the formation of antibodies and cells of the immune system. Fiber, found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, is the main food for beneficial intestinal microflora. It promotes the formation of fatty acids that regulate the immune system.

Vitamins and trace elements are also important regulators of immune processes. For example, vitamin C supports the work of immune cells, and zinc, found in seafood, seeds, and nuts, is important for the synthesis of antibodies and the repair of mucous membranes. Vitamin D, obtained from oily fish and egg yolks, is also involved in the immune response.

"Do not forget about products with polyphenols, such as berries, green tea and nuts. They have antioxidant properties, protecting cells from damage," said the gastroenterologist. "Газете.Ru ".

Thus, daily intestinal care and a varied diet, including all the necessary nutrients, is the best way to maintain health and strong immunity.

Marina Stepanenko, nutritionist at the SM Clinic, said on January 29 that the opinion that expensive superfoods are needed to maintain health is not true: many affordable products can effectively compensate for the deficiency of vitamins and trace elements. One of these products is seaweed, which occupies a leading position in terms of iodine content — only 100 g of the plant covers the daily requirement of an adult. It is also rich in magnesium, iron, potassium, vitamins A, E, K and B.
