Nine patients died at the Prokopyevsk boarding school in January, an inspection is underway.

Nine guests of a boarding house in Prokopyevsk died within a month after an outbreak of influenza A recorded at the facility in January. This was announced on January 29 on the official website of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Kuzbass.

"The Commission found that in January 2026, nine deaths were registered among those staying at the psycho-neurological boarding school," the report says.

According to the ministry, the cause of death of seven people was decompensation of heart failure, circulatory system diseases complicated by rhythm disturbances and thrombosis. After the detection of the massive disease, anti-epidemic measures were initiated, the condition of the patients was monitored by doctors.

The causes of death of two more people — a 73-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man who died in a city hospital — are being clarified.

"In each case, a thorough check of the causes of the incident will be carried out with the involvement of all competent authorities. The information, which was reported to the commission by the staff of the boarding school, was transferred to law enforcement agencies for a legal assessment," the regional Ministry of Labor reports.

On January 24, the Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the region announced the start of a pre-investigation check. On the same day, a criminal case was opened under Article 236 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of sanitary and epidemiological rules that inadvertently caused mass illness of people and created a threat of such consequences").

Those involved in the deaths of two people and the poisoning of 350 others face up to 10 years in prison.

On January 24, a source from Izvestia reported that 46 people had been hospitalized as a result of an outbreak of influenza A in the Prokopiev boarding school for people with mental disorders. A group case of influenza A virus was recorded from January 23 to January 24. According to the source, the virus was laboratory confirmed in 16 people, they were taken to Novokuznetsk City Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital.
