- Ryabkov stated the continuing position of the Russian Federation on the need to release Maduro.
Russia maintains its previous position regarding the US actions to detain Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. This was announced on January 25 by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
"His capture was carried out in gross violation of many provisions of international law. I understand that the US administration has a different approach to all this. But our approach does not change from this," he said in an interview with TASS.
Ryabkov clarified that from the first hours after the information about the incident appeared, Moscow raised the issue of the need to release the Venezuelan president. Many Latin American and Caribbean States have also joined these demands.
The Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that it is unacceptable when the head of a sovereign state, who has full legal immunity in accordance with international law, is subjected to such arbitrary and illegal actions by another state.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on January 15 that Maduro's abduction violated US international legal obligations, and any court decisions by Washington would also be illegal. She added that the arguments that Maduro allegedly lost his immunity cannot be taken into account, since the politician was removed from his post during an illegal military operation.
Earlier, on January 13, US President Donald Trump, commenting on the large-scale strike that his air force launched against Venezuela, called this operation, during which Maduro and his wife Celia Flores were captured, "the most impeccable" and "brilliant."
