The authorities of 14 US states and the District of Columbia have declared a state of emergency due to the impending extreme cold and heavy snowfall. This was reported on January 23 by CBS News with reference to New York Governor Kathy Hokul.

It is noted that an emergency has been declared in a wide area from Texas to New York State in connection with a powerful storm that is expected to hit the country over the weekend. In some areas, a sharp drop in temperature is predicted well below zero, which can trigger rare natural phenomena, including the destruction of trees due to severe frosts.

In New York, forecasters expect up to 40 cm of snow, which could be the heaviest snowfall since February 2021. Experts warn that the influx of Arctic air will lead to icing, which can paralyze traffic and cause large-scale power outages for several days.

The bad weather has already affected the operation of transport. Airlines have cancelled more than 1.5 thousand flights scheduled for Saturday. The most tense situation is developing at the airports of Dallas, Atlanta and Charlotte, which, according to forecasts, will be in the zone of the strongest impact of the elements.

On the eve of January 22, it was noted that more than 235 million people in more than 40 US states — from Arizona to Maine — are on the path of a large-scale winter storm, which is expected to cover over 2,000 miles. It was clarified that almost 1.3 thousand flights across the United States have already been canceled until Saturday, and thousands more are planned to be canceled before the beginning of next week.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
