A British pensioner was fined £600 for a box that fell out of a trash can.
A British pensioner was fined £600 for a cardboard box that fell out of a dumpster. This was reported on January 22 by the Metro newspaper, citing the family of 83-year-old Carol Wright.
The pensioner claims that in October last year she dropped a frying pan box into a recycling container in Reading, but a few days later she received a letter from Kingdom accusing her of illegally dumping garbage and threatening criminal prosecution.
It is reported that the letter contained a photo of an employee with a box with the woman's address on it, against the background of overflowing tanks. Her daughter Catherine stated that the box was probably blown out of the container by the wind.
"My mom says she doesn't want to live anymore. She just stares at the walls and cries. She doesn't eat. Her health has deteriorated dramatically since all this happened," said the daughter.
Reading Council said an investigation was launched after the waste box was discovered at the site and no response was received from the woman within 30 days.
The contractor requested evidence of mitigating circumstances, but they were not provided. The authorities said they remain open to dialogue and hope to resolve the case without further action. The family insists on the pensioner's innocence and claims that she is unable to pay the fine of £600.
The Daily Mail reported in December last year that in the UK, an 86-year—old pensioner was fined for environmental pollution - he spat out a piece of paper that flew into his mouth. He was fined £250, but after an appeal, the amount was reduced to £150.
