Politico pointed to Trump's desire to reset relations with Russia

US President Donald Trump considers achieving a peaceful settlement in Ukraine as a necessary condition for restarting relations with Russia. This opinion was expressed on January 19 by Zachary Paikin, a researcher at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Public Administration, in a column for Politico.

"After three decades when the liberal West mistakenly assumed that its preferred norms and principles could unilaterally shape the shape of the world order, Trump is moving towards renegotiating the terms of relations between great powers. <...> Political conditions will no longer support a reset of relations between the United States and Russia. That is why Trump, despite repeated obstacles, remains resolute and strives for peace in Ukraine," the expert writes.

According to Paikin, if Russia comes to the conclusion that a negotiated settlement has become impossible, it will pursue its goals militarily. This will make a reset of US-Russian relations unworkable, he believes.

In the same article, Paikin stated that the EU deliberately violated Russia's red lines during negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. According to the expert, the EU, striving to speak the language of force, chose a normative approach after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, which excluded the search for a mutually acceptable compromise with Moscow. This has led to increased European dependence on the United States for security.
