The accelerating increase in the number of bankruptcies in Germany, including among large enterprises, may lead to the collapse of the German economy. This was announced on January 13 by Alice Weidel, co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) opposition party.

"The lack of resources from Russia is leading to the collapse of Germany's entire business model, which has worked exceptionally well for decades," she said, answering questions from reporters following a meeting of the AFD faction in the Bundestag.

According to the politician, the number of bankruptcies among large companies continues to grow rapidly, moving "from one maximum to another." She pointed out that in 2024 the indicator increased by 35%, in 2025 — by another 25%, and in 2026, according to her estimates, an even sharper increase in absolute values is possible.

In addition, the AfG co-chair recalled that the German industry has lost about 400,000 jobs since 2019. In her opinion, improvements should not be expected with the current political course. Weidel believes that under German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the economic situation will develop according to the same scenario as under the previous Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

On January 11, Gazprom's press service reported that the filling level in underground gas storage facilities in Germany and France had dropped below 50%. It was noted that the cold weather in Europe stimulates the accelerated consumption of resources from storage facilities.
