A Turkish blogger discovered the cockpit of a plane that crashed 51 years ago in the Sea of Marmara

The team of Turkish blogger Nedim Kuru, during sonar scanning, discovered the wreckage of the Turkish Airlines Fokker F-28 Bursa aircraft in the Sea of Marmara, which crashed 51 years ago. This was reported by the Haberler newspaper on January 8.

The disaster occurred on January 30, 1975. Since then, searches have been conducted repeatedly for the wreckage of the liner, but they have not been officially discovered. 42 people died in the crash. According to Kuru, his team had previously found individual fragments of the aircraft during underwater drone dives in the Buyukcekmece and Ambarli areas in the Marmara Sea.

"We started searching for the wreckage entirely using a sonar system (radar). With the help of sonar, we recorded a large fragment — the nose of the aircraft. As the southerly wind subsides, we plan to dive again in the coming days to fix the front of the aircraft detected by our sonar. We have received the necessary permits from the Istanbul administration. Now we know the location of the plane. The plane is still at a depth of 75 m. Very soon we will bring to the surface a liner that has been lying at the bottom of the Marmara Sea for 50 years," Kuru shared.

Among those killed in the crash were well-known people in Turkey, including the father-in-law of football coach Fatih Terim, Kamuran Aksu, as well as the sister of singer Seyal Taner, who was a flight attendant. At one time, the search was limited due to a lack of technology, and the wreckage of the plane was never officially recovered from the bottom.

On December 24 last year, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the discovery of the black box of the crashed plane, on board of which was a delegation of the General Staff of the Libyan army. It was clarified that there were eight people on board, including five Libyan soldiers.

The plane left Esenboga Airport on December 23 at 20:17. A few minutes later, the crew announced an emergency situation and their intention to return to the place of departure. Soon the connection was interrupted and the wreckage of the aircraft was discovered at 22:00 in Ankara.
