Belarusian Foreign Ministry condemns US attack on Venezuela

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry on Saturday, January 3, categorically condemned the US attack on Venezuela.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus categorically condemns the armed aggression <...> against the sovereign state of Venezuela, and considers it a direct threat to international peace and security," the Foreign Ministry's Telegram channel says.

Belarus expressed its "unwavering support" for the legitimate government of Venezuela and called for an urgent convocation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The Foreign Ministry added that the country's diplomatic mission in Caracas continues to operate normally, and its staff is safe. In addition, Belarus also noted the right of Venezuelan citizens to determine their own fate, stressing that no form of external interference, especially forceful, "can be justified."

Military bases and infrastructure facilities were attacked

On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States had successfully launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela. According to him, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his family have been captured and taken out of the country. The American leader added that the operation was carried out with the participation of American law enforcement agencies. The Russian Foreign Ministry called Maduro's possible removal an encroachment on Venezuela's sovereignty.

The Venezuelan authorities have declared a state of emergency in the country due to the American strikes. In turn, Colombian President Gustavo Petro called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations and the Organization of American States.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also expressed deep concern and condemnation after the US military operation in Venezuela. The Russian side expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and their leadership and called for preventing further escalation of tension between the two countries.
