Kramnik sued the International Chess Federation
Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik has sued the International Chess Federation (FIDE) over the death of American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky. He said this in an interview with Sport-Express on December 30.
"As of today, I have initiated formal legal proceedings against FIDE in accordance with Swiss law in a court in Lausanne, where the organization's headquarters are located," Kramnik said.
The chess player explained that in accordance with Swiss procedural law, mandatory pre-trial proceedings will be conducted first, which usually lasts 2-3 months.
He also said that the specific provisions of the law on which the claim is based, as well as the exact amount of financial compensation required, will be finalized by his legal team before filing the main claim.
According to Kramnik, an official request was sent to FIDE headquarters to preserve all documentation, correspondence and electronic records related to the process.
Kramnik wrote on social media that Naroditsky had been experiencing health problems for a long time, and called himself the only person who "shouted about Daniel's obvious long-term problems." According to him, at the same time, Naroditsky's friends tried to hide the chess player's problems.
On October 22, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich announced that the federation's ethics and discipline committee would consider Kramnik's statements about Naroditsky's death. He also confirmed that the committee will take all appropriate measures in case of disrespect in the chess community.
On the same day, FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky said that Vladimir Kramnik's reaction to Daniel Naroditsky's death was outrageous and shameful. On October 20, the Federation announced Naroditsky's death. He represented the USA at the World Team Championship in 2015 and finished first in the national championship in 2019.
