- Likhachev announced the start of start-up operations at the first power unit of Kursk NPP-2
Start-up operations have begun at the first power unit of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant-2 (NPP-2). This was announced on December 28 by Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom State Corporation, during a New Year's greetings, a video posted on the corporation's Telegram channel.
"Heroic work has been done by our comrades in the Kursk region, where start—up operations at the new power unit have begun," he said.
According to Likhachev, despite the foreign policy pressure, the Russian nuclear power industry is strengthening its position in the international arena. Rosatom is the only company in the field of nuclear energy that has launched export projects for the construction of nuclear power plants in several countries at once, he added.
"We have arrived at new sites in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, and we are preparing to build a third, new unit at the Belarusian NPP," Likhachev said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on December 12 that Rosatom was building the largest number of blocks in the world. According to him, the corporation will maintain such a pace of construction.
On November 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia plans to organize the serial production of small nuclear power plants. In the future, Russia plans to build 38 new nuclear power units in less than 20 years, mainly in the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. Their total capacity will be comparable to the capacity of the entire existing nuclear generation in the country.
