Famous Belarusian architect and sculptor Zankovich has died.
Belarusian sculptor Valentin Zankovich, who took part in the creation of the Khatyn and Brest Hero Fortress memorials, has died at the age of 89. This was announced on December 23 by a member of the International Affairs commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky.
"I regret to inform you that Valentin Pavlovich Zankovich, laureate of the Lenin Prize, the Lenin Komsomol Prize of Belarus, Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, has died," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to Sputnik Belarus, Zankovich is rightfully considered a master of Soviet and Belarusian architecture and sculpture. He was born in Minsk in 1937. He graduated from the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute (with a degree in architecture) and the Belarusian Theater and Art Institute (with a degree in sculpture).
Among Zankovich's most famous works are the memorial complexes "Khatyn" and "Brest Fortress – Hero" (co–authored), the stele "Minsk – hero City" (co-authored), the composition "Running" at the Dynamo stadium, the sculpture "Orpheus" at the building of the music college on Griboyedov Street in Minsk, the monument "Belarus Partizanskaya".
