A study by the Tokyo Institute of Gerontology has shown that increasing the efficiency of mitochondria can help slow down aging, improve health, and increase life expectancy. This was reported on December 19 by Science Daily magazine.

The head of the study, Satoshi Inoue, explained that the team studied the COX7RP protein, which helps form mitochondrial respiratory supercomplexes. According to him, it forms super complexes, improving energy production and reducing the level of reactive oxygen species that cause oxidative stress in cells.

For the study, the researchers created transgenic mice that produce more COX7RP throughout their lives. The results showed that the rodents lived an average of 6.6% longer than normal. Their health, as specified, has also improved: increased sensitivity to insulin, improved blood lipid levels, as well as muscle endurance and liver condition.

"Our study has identified new mitochondrial mechanisms underlying the slowing down of aging and the increase in life expectancy, as well as provided new insights into strategies aimed at prolonging a healthy and long life. For example, supplements and medications that improve the assembly and functioning of mitochondrial respiratory supercomplexes can help increase life expectancy," Inoue emphasized.

Research shows that improving the function of mitochondria and increasing their energy efficiency can become the basis for new methods of treatment and prevention of age-related diseases such as diabetes, dyslipidemia and obesity. According to the publication, subsequent analyses may strengthen the case that mitochondrial supercomplexes are targets for treatment.
