A girl who disappeared at the age of three was found in the USA 42 years later.

The girl Michelle Marie Newton, abducted at the age of three, was found alive 42 years later. However, she did not know that she had been listed in the national database of missing children all this time. This was reported by the Metro newspaper on December 18.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the girl's mother, Debra Newton, left the house in April 1983, claiming that the family was moving to Georgia. When the father, Joseph Newton, arrived in the state, he discovered that his wife and daughter had disappeared. Between 1984 and 1985, the woman called for the last time and disappeared.

The search process was launched, but the abduction case was closed in 2000 due to the inability to contact the father. Michelle was removed from the Missing children's database in 2005. However, in 2016, at the request of relatives, the investigation was resumed. The following year, Debra Newton was indicted again. Soon, the police received information that she had been spotted in Florida under a different name. Debra's photo was compared with a picture from 1983, as a result, the similarity was confirmed.

In November 2023, the police found out Debra's location and arrested her at her place of residence, in a house on the territory of a retirement complex in Florida. She lived under the name Sharon Neely. Later, the police informed Michelle that she was actually missing.

She was shocked to learn that she had lived under a false name all her life, and immediately contacted the authorities in Kentucky. She stressed that she was unaware of her status as a victim of the abduction. After that, a reunion with her father was organized.

Debra Newton, in turn, was arrested on charges of violating custody rights and released on bail provided by one of the family members.

The Guardian newspaper reported on January 1 that a woman who had been missing for 52 years had been found alive in the UK. According to law enforcement agencies, British woman Sheila Fox disappeared in 1972 at the age of 16 in the city of Coventry in the West Midlands. Information about the whereabouts of 68-year-old Fox was received by the West Midlands police department after the police re-published a photo of 16-year-old Sheila in the "Wanted" category.
