Researchers have found that plant-based products with minimal industrial processing significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and ultra-processed plant-based products can reverse this effect and even increase the risk by 40%. This was reported on December 15 in the journal Science Daily.

Previous studies have shown that eating large amounts of ultra-processed foods is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A new study by French scientists concerned not only the origin of food — plant or animal — but also its nutritional value and the degree of industrial processing.

An analysis of data from 63,835 adult participants showed that people who consumed more high-quality and minimally processed plant foods had about a 40% lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared with those who ate fewer of these foods and more animal products.

At the same time, participants whose diets included ultra-processed plant-based foods such as industrial whole-grain breads, ready-made soups, pastas, or salads with dressing did not receive heart benefits. And diets with low-quality and ultra-processed plant foods, including chips, sugary drinks, chocolates, and sugary breakfasts, increased the risk of cardiovascular disease by about 40%.

The scientists emphasized that it is important for heart health to take into account not only the balance of plant and animal products, but also the nutritional value and degree of processing of food. They recommend giving preference to fresh, frozen or well-preserved fruits and vegetables without the addition of fats, salt, sugar and other additives.

On November 27, Medical Xpress reported on the association of weakness in young people who had a heart attack with the risk of premature death. According to the study, in young patients with severe weakness, the risk of death was almost four times higher than in healthy people of the same age. It was clarified that they died on average six years earlier than expected.
