The US plan for Ukraine involves the creation of a demilitarized zone, the provision of security guarantees to Kiev and the accelerated entry of the country into the European Union (EU). The Washington Post (WP) wrote about this on December 9, citing sources in the American administration and Ukrainian officials.

"The creation of a demilitarized zone along the entire ceasefire line will be followed by a deeper zone where heavy weapons will be prohibited. This line will be carefully monitored, similar to the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea," the article says.

According to the newspaper, the plan includes three documents: a peace agreement, security guarantees and an economic recovery program. The key points are the creation of a demilitarized zone along the entire ceasefire line.

It clarifies that the plan also provides for Ukraine's accelerated accession to the EU by 2027 and Washington's provision of "guarantees similar to Article 5 of NATO," which must be ratified by the US Congress. The issue of the size of the Ukrainian army remains controversial: the possibility of limiting the number of 600-800 thousand fighters is being discussed.

The Wall Street Journal reported on December 9 that, according to European officials, it could take weeks or months for conditions to be agreed between Russia, the United States and Ukraine on key issues unless major changes take place on the battlefield.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that Russia wants to reach an agreement with Ukraine, but at the moment it is legally impossible, and the main thing is that the decisions should be internationally recognized. The Russian leader also explained that the Ukrainian government had made a strategic mistake by refusing to hold presidential elections and losing legitimacy.
