The Government forces of Benin retained control of the situation after the attempted military coup. This was announced on December 7 by the Prime Minister of Benin, Olushegun Ajadi Bakari.

"There is an attempt, but the situation is under control. <...> Most of the army is still loyal, and we are taking control of the situation," Bakari was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Bakari clarified that the rebels only managed to seize control of the state television, but the broadcast signal was turned off on Sunday morning, December 7.

Earlier in the day, the military in Benin, which seized control of national television, announced that they had removed President Patrice Talon from office. In addition, Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, who led the takeover of television, declared himself chairman of the military reconstruction committee.
