The media learned about the distortion of Putin's words by Orban's translator during a meeting in the Kremlin

The translator of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban inaccurately conveyed to him the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting in the Kremlin. This was reported by the Hungarian news portal Telex.

As the publication pointed out, the translator softened and paraphrased some of the remarks that touched on the topic of the Ukrainian conflict. For example, instead of saying, "We know your balanced opinion on the problems of Ukraine," she said, "And I know that international politics, of course, has an impact on you."

When Putin spoke about the bilateral relations between Russia and Hungary, the translator omitted some of the details altogether. In particular, she did not translate to Orban a fragment concerning a 23% decrease in trade between the countries due to external restrictions. The translator did not give any reasons for this, or a specific percentage.

"Last year also brought changes, and it wasn't easy for us either," she said.

Putin's words that the views of Moscow and Budapest "on certain issues" do not converge were also distorted. She translated them to Orban as "our international cooperation is also good."

Tamas Mentzer, Director of Communications for the Hungarian ruling Fidesz party, justified the translator's actions. He expressed confidence that the woman simply "did not hear the words of the Russian president well," and called her the best translator from Russian into Hungarian.
