The 1974 world champion of the German national team, Dieter Herzog, has died at the age of 79. This was announced on November 21 by the German Federal Football League (Bundesliga) on its website.

"Former Bayer Leverkusen and Fortuna Dusseldorf striker Dieter Herzog, who won the FIFA World Cup with the German national team in 1974, has died at the age of 79," the publication says.

The cause of death is not specified.

Herzog, a midfielder, played for Bottrop, Hamborn 07, Fortuna and Bayer. With Fortuna, he finished third in the Bundesliga twice (in the 1972/73 and 1973/74 seasons).

Herzog played five matches for the German national team and played twice in the second round of the World Cup, against Yugoslavia and Sweden.

After his career ended, Herzog worked as a scout at Bayer Leverkusen.
