- Allergologists warned about seasonal risks for allergy sufferers during winter holidays
Preparations for the winter holidays are accompanied by increased exposure to allergens and asthma triggers. Experts note that the combination of travel, seasonal food, cold weather and festive decorations increases the risks for people with chronic respiratory diseases. This was reported on November 19 in the Medical Xpress magazine.
According to allergist Cheri Zachary, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI), the New Year's season often brings unexpected factors that can trigger symptoms. She stressed that pre-planned measures help to maintain a stable state of health and spend the holidays without complications.
Experts recalled that traveling can lead to contact with dust, germs and an unusual environment. Patients were advised to wipe surfaces on the plane and keep medications — inhalers, antihistamines, and epinephrine autoinjectors — in their carry-on bags.
Additional attention is required for people with food allergies: any festive dinners — from restaurants to family feasts — may include hidden allergens. Experts advised to specify the ingredients of the dishes in advance and, if necessary, bring food with you.
The stress that accompanies an intense holiday schedule is also seen as an aggravating factor. ACAAI explained that hormonal responses to emotional stress increase the sensitivity of the immune system. People with chronic conditions are advised to monitor their sleep patterns, take breaks in their schedules, and use breathing practices.
Cold air in winter remains a classic asthma trigger. Allergologists recalled that sudden temperature changes, especially during the transition between heated rooms and the street, can provoke seizures. Doctors advised covering your nose and mouth with a scarf or mask and avoiding hypothermia.
A separate block of risks is associated with festive decorations. The decor that is stored in attics or basements is often covered with dust and mold spores. Experts recommended unpacking items outdoors, wiping surfaces and paying attention to the condition of live Christmas trees, which may also contain allergens.
The ACAAI stressed that following these recommendations will allow children and adults to spend winter holidays safely. The organization recommends contacting allergists for additional advice.
The journal Medical Xpress reported on October 31 that improved ventilation systems can significantly improve indoor air quality and make breathing easier for people with asthma. During the study, three types of ventilation systems were installed in homes: improved exhaust fans in the bathroom, air supply systems connected to central heating and cooling systems, as well as energy recovery devices that continuously exchanged air inside and outside. All systems demonstrated improvements in air quality and asthma symptoms, but the highest results were recorded in homes with energy recovery systems.
