Researchers assessed the prevalence of daytime sleepiness
A survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) found that 72% of adults in the United States regularly experience drowsiness during the day, which prevents them from performing daily tasks. Many respondents noted that fatigue affects their mood (60%), stress or anxiety levels (53%), and work productivity (42%). This was reported on November 18 by Medical Xpress magazine.
"Daytime sleepiness is a common problem that can negatively affect mood, performance, and quality of life. Healthy sleep allows us to feel great and work as efficiently as possible during the day," said Dr. Eric Olson, former president of AASM and professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic's Alix Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota.
The survey also showed differences in age and gender. Women (36%) were more likely to report the effect of drowsiness on household life compared to men (25%). People aged 25-34 (30%) and 35-44 (31%) were the most likely to report that drowsiness interferes with their relationships.
Many adults try to overcome fatigue with the help of quick solutions. So, 56% of respondents consume caffeine, and 46% prefer daytime sleep.
"Although it's common to drink coffee or another caffeinated beverage to increase concentration, constant dependence on caffeine to maintain performance throughout the day is a sign that you need to sleep more," Olson explained.
The AASM recommends that adults sleep more than seven hours every night. A recent statement from the organization warns that drowsiness can be harmful to health and be a symptom of various diseases and sleep disorders.
Experts recommend contacting a doctor if problems with maintaining sleep are observed during regular activities, loud snoring or shortness of breath is recorded, difficulties with memory or concentration, problems falling asleep and sleeping in general, as well as when waking up with a lack of vigor.
On November 5, Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a neurologist, candidate of medical Sciences, and expert at the Hemotest laboratory, told Izvestia about the causes of excessive daytime sleepiness. According to her, normal daytime sleepiness occurs only in conditions of short-term overwork or after a sleepless night, in other cases, a regular desire to sleep during the day may be a sign of serious health problems.
