- The Ministry of Transport announced a pilot launch of boarding a train using biometrics in 2026.
A pilot launch of the technology of boarding a train based on biometric data is planned to be carried out in 2026 on limited routes. This was announced on November 18 by the Russian Ministry of Transport on the eve of the Transport of Russia forum.
"There is a possibility that a pilot launch on limited routes will take place in 2026, and after evaluating the results, scaling will be carried out," the ministry said in an interview with TASS.
The Ministry of Transport added that the technology is already being tested. To check the operation of the system, a test group was formed, where the service is being tested.
Boarding by biometrics will be carried out through a Single biometric system. To use the service, passengers must confirm their biometric data in advance and consent to their processing, the ministry explained.
It is noted that biometrics will become an alternative to presenting a passport: upon boarding, passengers will be able to choose a convenient identification method — by document or by biometric data.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed interest in the biometric payment feature developed by Sberbank. It was presented by German Gref, Chairman of the bank's Management Board, during a meeting in the Kremlin on July 29.
