A businessman was sentenced to five years in a penal colony in the case of an explosion at a gas station in Makhachkala.

The Kumtorkalinsky District Court of Dagestan sentenced 36-year-old businessman Eldar Nasrulaev to five years in prison for violations that led to the tragic explosion at a gas station in 2023 and the death of 33 people. This was announced on November 17 by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation.

"The Kumtorkalinsky District Court of the Republic of Dagestan has sentenced 36-year-old local resident Eldar Nasrulaev. He was found guilty under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (storage for the purpose of marketing goods and products, provision of services that do not meet the requirements for the safety of life or health of consumers, which negligently caused serious harm to human health, as well as the death of two or more persons)… The court sentenced Nasrulaev to 5 years in prison to serve his sentence in a general regime penal colony," the ministry said in a statement.

Nasrulaev is also prohibited from engaging in business activities related to the wholesale and retail trade of chemicals, compounds and fertilizers for a period of three years.

The court found that he was trading fertilizers and other products without registering as a self-employed or entrepreneur. To store ammonium nitrate and hydrogen peroxide, he used unauthorized premises that were not equipped with fire alarms and ventilation, which violated GOST requirements for the safety of handling such substances.
