Conversation pointed out the difficulties in the seizure of Russian assets by Europe
The European Union (EU) is avoiding a decision on the confiscation of frozen Russian assets, as it seeks to preserve space for political maneuver and prevent a final break in relations with Moscow. This was announced on November 17 by The Conversation portal.
According to the author of the material, the issue of using assets is not only financial, but also geopolitical in nature.
"Giving them away now means betting on Ukraine's victory. Postponing means maintaining flexibility in case Russia gains the upper hand or the conflict reaches a dead end," the publication says.
It is noted that more and more EU states perceive the support of Kiev as a burdensome strategic obligation. At the same time, the union does not want to take such a risky step, including asset confiscation, as confidence in Ukraine's success among European governments has noticeably decreased, despite public statements of support.
Earlier, on October 27, the Politico newspaper reported that the European Union (EU) had begun developing an alternative plan for financial support for Kiev after Belgium blocked a proposal to use frozen Russian assets.
However, Belgium did not support this initiative. According to the Prime Minister of the kingdom, Bart De Wever, the EU leaders did not provide guarantees to protect Belgium from possible retaliatory measures by the Russian Federation in case of confiscation of frozen Russian assets.
