History and traditions of veneration of Archangel Michael

The holiday, popularly known as Michaelmas Day, is established in honor of the archangel Michael and other Celestial disembodied Forces. According to church tradition, on this day the angelic host is glorified, the leader of which is Archangel Michael, one of the most powerful and revered archangels in the Christian, Jewish and Islamic traditions. His name translates from Hebrew as "who is like God," which symbolizes his unconditional loyalty to the Creator. It was he who led the heavenly host in the battle against the fallen angel Lucifer and overthrew him from heaven, establishing the divine order.

In Russia, St. Michael's Day has always been celebrated on a special scale, marking the end of autumn work and preparations for winter. By this time, the harvest had already been harvested, and all contracts and transactions had been completed. In the folk tradition, the holiday was associated with hospitality and reconciliation: it was customary to visit, set rich tables, where fresh beer, honey pies and homemade meat were certainly present. There was a saying: "You can't work for Mikhail — God will punish you." This prohibition was not just a superstition, but a tribute to the patron saint, whose day should be devoted to prayer, rest and good deeds.
