The shortest day and longest night of the year, the winter solstice, is not just an astronomical event, but an ancient holiday that since ancient times has symbolized the rebirth of light and the hope of an early spring. Izvestia has prepared postcards and greetings especially for this date.
From Celtic bonfires to modern Winter Solstice traditions
The winter solstice, which in the Northern Hemisphere falls on December 21 in 2025, is the moment when the Sun reaches its lowest altitude above the horizon. From an astronomical point of view, this is the beginning of an astronomical winter. For many ancient peoples, this day had a sacred significance.: they perceived it as the "death of the old Sun" and the birth of a new one. After this point, the daylight gradually begins to increase, and therefore the victory of light over darkness became the reason for celebrations and rituals.
Among the Celts, the celebration was called Yule, the symbol of which was the Yule log, which was burned to scare away the darkness and attract good luck. The ancient Germans and Scandinavians also celebrated Yule, honoring ancestral spirits and the gods of rebirth. In ancient Rome, Saturnalia took place from December 17th to December 23rd, days of fun and gifts when social differences were temporarily abolished. In addition, closer to the winter solstice, the birth of the undefeated sun was celebrated, a holiday associated with the cult of the Sun.
The ancient Slavs had an image of Karachun, a powerful spirit of cold and darkness. After the longest night, the Solstice began, when light overcomes darkness. Later, these images merged with folk winter rituals, such as Kolyada, which go back to the same ideas about the rebirth of sunlight.
Modern winter solstice celebrations are often rooted in these ancient beliefs. Today, many who are interested in natural cycles or esoteric practices consider this day to be an energy frontier. It is customary to sum up the results of the outgoing year, let go of everything old and make wishes. The simplest rite is to light candles or a fireplace, symbolically inviting the light to return to the house. This is a time of silence, comfort and preparation for the main winter holidays.
