Regular physical activity can not only strengthen the body, but also literally "rejuvenate" the brain. Studies have shown that people who exercise slow down the atrophy of neurons and restore areas responsible for memory. This was announced on November 9 by the Sohu media portal.

As we age, the brain naturally shrinks in volume — starting at about age 30, it loses about 0.5% of its mass annually. The hippocampus— the area responsible for memory, is particularly affected. However, physical activity can slow down and sometimes reverse this process. When a person moves, the blood supply increases, the brain receives more oxygen and nutrients. This improves the transmission of signals between neurons, and also stimulates the production of proteins that promote the growth of new nerve cells.

Even a five-minute jog increases dopamine levels, which are responsible for motivation and pleasure. After 15-20 minutes of active movements, endorphins are released, which bring a sense of calm and inner balance. If a person stops exercising, the level of "hormones of joy" drops, which confirms that movement really rebuilds the chemical balance of the brain. One of the key studies conducted with people 55-80 years old showed that just six months of moderate exercise (40 minutes of brisk walking three times a week) increased the volume of the hippocampus by an average of 2%. This is equivalent to several "rewound" years of the biological age of the brain.

The scientists emphasized that three half-hour sessions per week are enough — brisk walking, swimming, cycling or light running. Regularity is important, as well as the habit of moving more in everyday life: climbing stairs, getting up from the table, doing short warm-ups. The effect is complemented by a balanced diet, adequate sleep and stress reduction. All this helps the brain stay flexible and clear for longer.

Physical activity is not just taking care of the body, but a strategic investment in cognitive capital. Each workout enhances attention, improves memory, and helps the brain adapt to stress. You can start at any age — the brain remains plastic all your life. As the researchers concluded, "the smartest investment is investing in your own brain."

Endocrinologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences Zukhra Pavlova reported on October 20 that an excess of sweet and fatty foods can negatively affect brain function, but plain water, fruits, berries, cereals and nuts can have a positive effect on it, according to her. Pavlova also urged not to avoid tea and coffee in her diet, which, however, are important to drink in moderation.
