St. Seraphim was born in 1856 into the family of an officer. After receiving a military education, he made a successful career, but decided to devote his life to serving God. As a monk, he became a spiritual writer, the author of works on theology and the history of the Church.
In 1937, he was arrested and shot. In 1997, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized him as a hieromartyr.
Prayer to the Holy Martyr Seraphim, Metropolitan of Leningrad and Gdovsk
The troparion to the Holy Martyr Seraphim, voice 5, reads as follows: "Having loved the army of the King of heaven more than the earthly, thou didst appear, a fiery servant of the Holy Trinity. Composing the instructions of the pastor of Kronstadt in your heart, you have multiplied the manifold gifts given to you by God for the benefit of the people of God. Having been a teacher of piety and a champion of the unity of the Church, you were even worthy to suffer until you lost your home. Holy Martyr Seraphim, pray to Christ our God that our souls may be saved."
In addition, there is a Kontakion, voice 6: "You were the namesake of the Wonderworker of Sarov, you had a warm love for him, you proclaimed your exploits and miracles to the world through your writings, you were faithful to his glorification, and you were worthy of a grateful visit from the venerable himself. With you now, Holy Martyr Seraphim, residing in the heavenly palaces, pray to Christ, the God of Seraphim's joy, to be partakers of us."
